Taking A Sickle Cell Test is important.

Taking A Sickle Cell Test is important.

Congratulations on taking, or preparing to take, the sickle cell test.  This is a good decision  for men and women, boys and girls.   The results can be important to your good health and training.

If you’re planning to participate in sports, it is especially important that you know your sickle health status.  Schedule your test at least three weeks before school or practice start to avoid the rush.  The test involves two major parts:  taking a blood sample and processing the sample in the lab.  Then, your test results will be available.

More than likely, your school supports league-approved guidelines for testing athletes for sickle cell.  Check with your Athletic Department because testing  may be scheduled for your campus.  If testing is scheduled,  talk to your Coach or Trainer and make every effort to participate.

If  testing is not scheduled at your school, you are welcome to test at the Sickle Cell Foundation by appointment, Monday-Thursday, 10 AM to 4 PM.  Again, allow at least 3 weeks before your school or athletic program requires test information.

Please bring with you:

  • Photo ID  (i.e. Driver’s License)
  • Medical Insurance card (or copy of  parents/guardian card).    Fax to the  Lab at  (404) 755-7955 with your name and address.
  • A $25 fee is required to help cover your test and laboratory work.                                          Runners
  • A stamped envelope to receive your test results.  Also available for purchase at the Front Desk.

Please cancel appointments that you cannot keep to avoid penalty fees.  Fees are charged for non-cancelled appointments.
