ABOUT HEMOGLOBIN D TRAIT

HEMOGLOBIN D TRAIT IS NOT A DISEASE AND DOES NOT TYPICALLY CAUSE ANY SIGNIFICANT HEALTH PROBLEMS.

NO MEDICATION OR RESTRICTION OF ACTIVITIES IS USUALLY          pregnant couple

NECESSARY FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH HEMOGLOBIN D TRAIT.

HEMOGLOBIN D TRAIT BECOMES SIGNIFICANT:

  • WHEN ONE PARENT HAS D TRAIT
  • AND THE OTHER HAS SICKLE CELL TRAIT.
    • WITH EACH PREGNANCY, THERE IS A  25% CHANCE THE CHILD WILL HAVE SICKLE CELL HEMOGLOBIN D DISEASE (SD).

THESE INDIVIDUALS MAY BE ASYMPTOMATIC, OR EXPERIENCE MILD ANEMIA CHARACTERIZED BY PAINFUL CRISES THAT ARE TYPICAL OF PERSONS WITH SICKLE CELL ANEMIA (SS).
