INDIVDUALS WITH SICKLE CELL HEMOGLOBIN C DISEASE, CAN EXPERIENCE SOME OF THE SAME HEALTH PROBLEMS AS THOSE WITH “SS” BUT LESS SEVERE IN SOME CASES.

  • HEMOLYSIS IS LESS SEVERE
  • THE ANEMIA IS MILDER.
  • LIFE SPAN IS LONGER THAN “SS”
  • THE INCIDENCE OF STROKE IS LESS.

HEALTH PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH SICKLE CELL DISEASE

 AN ENLARGED SPLEEN IS MORE COMMON IN OLDER CHILDREN AND ADULTS, BUT THE SPLEEN DOESN’T FIGHT OFF INFECTIONS VERY WELL

  • SEQUESTRATION EPISODES ARE SEEN IN OLDER “SC” INDIVIDUAL
  • EYE PROBLEMS
  • BONE DAMAGE:  AVASCULAR NECROSIS (AVN) OF THE HIP AND SHOULDER
  • PATIENTS CAN ALSO EXPERIENCE OTHER PROBLEMS SIMILAR TO PERSONS WITH SICKLE CELL ANEMIA.
