 ABOUT SICKLE CELL TRAIT

WHAT IS HEMOGLOBIN?                                                                                      

HEMOGLOBIN IS THE SUBSTANCE THAT GIVES THE RED BLOOD CELL ITS COLOR.

  • IT CARRIES OXYGEN THROUGHOUT THE BODY
  • IS COMPOSED  OF PROTEIN AND IRON
  • THE MOST COMMON HEMOGLOBIN IS CALLED NORMAL/ADULT HEMOGLOBIN (A)

            WHY TEST FOR HEMOGLOBINOPATHIES OR ABNORMAL  HEMOGLOBINS?

 SICKLE CELL TRAIT

  • UNDER EXTREME CONDITIONS, WHEN LARGE AMOUNTS OF OXYGEN IS LOST OVER 10,000 FEET, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT BLOOD CELLS COULD SICKLE.
  •  SPLENIC INFARCTIONS HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN INDIVIDUALS WITH SICKLE CELL TRAIT WHILE AT HIGH ATTITUDES AND DURING PERIODS OF EXTREMELY VIGOROUS EXERCISE AT HIGH ALTITUDES.

PERSONS WITH SICKLE CELL TRAIT MUST EXERCISE CAUTION:

  • MOUNTAIN CLIMBING
  • DEEP SEA DIVING
  • DURING EXTREME EXERTION, WHEN LARGE AMOUNTS OF FLUIDS ARE LOST (DEHYDRATION), INTRAVASCULAR SICKLING CAN OCCUR.
  • DURING SURGERY: IF AN INDIVIDUAL HAS TO BE ANESTHETIZED, HYPOVENTILATION COULD OCCUR.

PERSONS WITH SICKLE CNormal and sickled cellsELL TRAIT MAY EXPERIENCE BLOOD IN THE URINE AND KIDNEY PROBLEMS.

  • THIS IS DUE TO DAMAGED BLOOD VESSELS IN THE KIDNEYAREA CAUSED BY SICKLED CELLS.

SICKLE CELL TRAIT DOES NOT CAUSE ANEMIA.

  • PERSONS ARE USUALLY ASYMPTOMATIC
  • AND HAVE A NORMAL LIFE SPAN.                                                                                                                            Normal and sickled cells
